As a member of the New Zealand Under-17 squad at the 2008 tournament that was hosted by New Zealand, Esson played in all three of New Zealand’s group matches. She also participated in the Women’s World Cup for New Zealand at the U-20 level in 2008 and 2010, however she did not see any playing time in either competition.
