Six-year-old Etan Kalil Patz, who vanished on his way to the SoHo bus stop in Lower Manhattan on May 25, 1979, was an American boy who lived from October 9, 1972, until May 25, 1979. His disappearance served as a catalyst for the movement for missing children, which resulted in new laws and strategies for finding missing children. Patz was one of the first kids included in the early 1980s “picture on a milk carton” ads, which took place some years after he vanished. The anniversary of Etan’s disappearance, May 25, was declared National Missing Children’s Day in the US by President Ronald Reagan in 1983.

It was discovered decades later that Patz had been kidnapped and killed the same day he went missing. In 2010, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office restarted the case. The purported crime scene’s basement was dug up by the FBI in 2012, but no fresh evidence was found there. Later that year, Pedro Hernandez, a suspect who had confessed, was accused with first-degree kidnapping and second-degree murder.
