In the summer of 1955, black Chicago youngster Emmett Till traveled to Mississippi to see relatives.

The 14-year-old was there when two white guys Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam grabbed him, wrongly accused him of indecent behavior, and then beat, disfigured, and lynched him. The woman, Carolyn Bryant claimed Till tried to grasp her hand and waist while whistling at her. He was thrown into the Tallahatchie River while being fastened to his neck with barbed wire and a big metal fan. A white-only jury found Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam not guilty of killing Till months after his death.

What did Emmett Till’s mom do after his death?

Mamie Till-Mobley, Till’s mother, campaigned to get her son’s body returned to Chicago when he passed away. She mandated that his casket remain open at his funeral so that everyone might see what had happened to her son.

Her choice served as a turning moment for the civil rights movement and inspired her to fight for her son’s and others’ rights. Thus, she became an educator and Civil Rights Movement activist after her son was killed.
