Dorsey was named board chairman on October 16, 2008, and In his capacity as chairman, he participated in a number of State Department delegations, including Jared Cohen’s trip to Iraq in April 2009. Twitter was slated to perform site maintenance in November, which would have required briefly shutting down Twitter’s servers, at the same time as Iranians marched to the streets as part of the Green Revolution. Since Iranians were using Twitter to coordinate and communicate, Cohen asked Dorsey to postpone the repair so that it wouldn’t interfere with the revolution there. The action generated debate because President Obama had previously stated that there would be no involvement in Iran.
