He was conceived by Eritrean immigrant Dawit Asghedom and African American mother Angelique Smith. Alongside his siblings Samantha and Samuel, he grew up in South Los Angeles’ Crenshaw district.
He attended Alexander Hamilton High School but dropped out before receiving his diploma.
At the age of 14, Hussle left his home and joined the local Rollin 60’s Community Crips, a branch of the broader Crips gang that had its roots mostly in the Crenshaw neighborhood where he had grown up.
He would, however, eventually strive to set himself apart from the gang and devote a large portion of his professional life to gang prevention.
In the Rollin’ 60s, none of his contemporaries survived in my portion of the Crenshaw District, he would later remark. None of my friends managed to avoid jail.
