Some of the most terrifying and massive creatures on the planet have humble beginnings (have you seen the marine popcorn that is a giant ocean sunfish larva?) While it may seem strange to use the word “adorable” when referring to, say, a great white shark, even the most murderous of miniatures can be charming.

Baby sharks can be born in one of two ways. Mother sharks lay eggs outside of their bodies, and the eggs hatch. The baby shark growing inside the mother shark is the second method.

Parent sharks, on the other hand, abandon their young as soon as they are born. They are left to their own devices.
If they are born from an egg, the egg will not be a typical chicken egg. Sharks born from eggs, like chickens, would have no chance of survival because the eggshell would be broken by water currents and rocks.

Shark eggs are protected by a tough membrane known as a mermaid’s purse. There is only one egg in this case.
