Religion, good against evil, integration and immigration are some main themes of The Satanic Verses.
- Religion: Despite the fact that the novel’s storyline hinges on the miraculous survival of its heroes, Gibreel and Saladin, the reader is left with the impression that his religious experiences are the result of madness rather than faith.
- Good versus evil: Using characters like Allie and Pamela, it seems like Rushdie is attempting to show that the boundary between good and evil is fluid and difficult to pin down.
- Immigration and assimilation: Because of their dual heritages in India and England, Gibreel and Saladin are put in a difficult position. Gibreel’s troubles may have driven him mad and ultimately to take his own life.
