The stern, distant matriarch of the family, Morticia originally made an appearance in Charles Addams’ newspaper drawings. She frequently made appearances with the rest of the family and was one of the few characters to actually speak in the cartoons, along with Gomez and Grandma.

Wednesday, Pugsley, and Pubert Addams are all born to Morticia and Gomez Addams. The cartoons by Charles Addams for The New Yorker magazine in the 1930s are where the character first appeared. None of the family members have names in the comics. Charles Addams chose her name after the word “mortician” when the characters were transformed for the 1964 television series. Ophelia is Morticia’s elder sister, and her maiden name is “Frump” (also played by Carolyn Jones in the original TV series). She was portrayed in the television series by Hester Frump, whose mother was Uncle Fester’s sister (played by Margaret Hamilton). Grandmama Addams is her in-mother. law’s The ties between Grandmama and Fester’s families are altered in the Addams Family movies from the 1990s. In reality, Fester is Gomez’s brother and Grandmama is Morticia’s mother, not the other way around.

Morticia is portrayed as a thin, exceedingly pale woman with long, straight black hair who is also mentioned as being a witch.

She can be seen donning a black pointed hat in one episode. She frequently don’t black hobble dresses that are form-fitting and have a fringe of fabric “tentacles” that resemble an octopus at the lower hem to match her hair. Wednesday claims that Morticia doesn’t use cosmetics on her face, just baking powder. She effortlessly seduces her husband Gomez by speaking French in each episode (or any other foreign language for that matter).
