It’s been a while since the UFC featured a PPV card that was centred around genuine stars. The UFC occasionally has stacked bills with title fights and other events. On Saturday, UFC 279 will feature that.

At UFC 279, Khamzat Chimaev, the biggest up-and-coming star in the sport, will square off against Nate Diaz, one of the UFC’s most bankable fighters.

The battle here is between layers.

Diaz has been attempting to get out of his UFC deal for years, and this is his final fight under that contract. He has been assigned the worst match-up imaginable as he exits.

Not only is Chimaev a fantastic fighter, but he’s also possibly one of the best athletes in MMA in the past ten years. He has destroyed the opposition, frequently winning matches without ever having to take a punch.

This is at the level of Rocky vs. Drago. It appears that the UFC is trying to give Diaz the most difficult fight imaginable as he prepares to leave the organization.

This has some pro-wrestling-related elements. By prioritizing the young fighter above the veteran who is departing for a competing company, the UFC is effectively attempting to raise its new star. It kind of stinks.

Diaz, however, has been here before. When he faced Conor McGregor in 2016, he was the lamb to the slaughter but managed to defy the odds, shock the world, and win in the second round. In spite of this, McGregor weighed 145 pounds while competing at 170.

This time, Diaz is up against a huge welterweight who has exceptional wrestling skills, which is essentially his undoing. The outlook, in short, is not good. This might resemble a squash match.

What weight is Diaz vs Khamzat?

Khamzat Chimaev’s weight was 178.5 pounds, over the non-title welterweight limit of 171. At 171 pounds, Diaz was. The fate of the main event of the pay-per-view card was still very much in doubt as of late Friday morning.
