In Baxley, Georgia, Buxton attended Appling County High School. He was chosen with the second overall choice in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft because several baseball analysts thought he was the most skilled player available. In 2013, he was presented the Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year Award. In 2015, Buxton made his MLB debut, and in 2017, he took home the Gold Glove Award.

At the age of six, Buxton began playing baseball. He participated in sports for the school’s football, basketball, and baseball teams while attending Appling County High School in Baxley, Georgia. In high school, Buxton picked up the moniker “Buck.” He had a 10-1 win-loss record, a 1.90 earned run average, and 154 strikeouts in 81 innings thrown as a pitcher during his senior year. Additionally, Buxton fired a fastball that was clocked at 99 mph (159 km/h). As he graduated from high school and got ready for the draft, his speed eventually helped him get a speed rating of 70—well above average.

Buxton was discovered by scouts when he was 15 years old. He was chosen to join a summer traveling team. He participated in baseball showcases like the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game and the East Coast Pro Showcase. Buxton had a.513 batting average with 38 steals in 39 games as a senior in high school. Buxton committed to a baseball scholarship at the University of Georgia with the goal of trying to make the football team on a walk-on basis.
