Tupac Amaru Shakur, also known as 2Pac and subsequently Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor who was born Lesane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971.

He is regarded by many as one of the greatest rappers of all time. With more than 75 million recordings sold globally, Shakur is one of the best-selling musicians.

Shakur is seen as a symbol of activism against inequity, and much of his music has been praised for addressing current socioeconomic concerns that affected inner communities.

Shakur was born in New York City to Black Panther Party members who were also political activists.

He moved to Baltimore in 1984 and the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988 after being raised by his mother.

He rose to prominence in West Coast hip hop with the 1991 publication of his debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, known for its conscious rap lyrics.

With his subsequent albums Me Against the World (1996) and Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. (1993), Shakur continued to enjoy both critical acclaim and commercial success (1995).

In favour of tense gangster rap, his All Eyez on Me (1996) album, which was awarded a Diamond certification, abandoned his contemplative lyricism.
