Darren Dean Wilson, who was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 14, 1986, stood 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 meters) tall and weighed roughly 210 lb (95 kg).

Wilson started working as a police officer in the Missouri town of Jennings in 2009. Wilson admitted to The New Yorker in 2015 that he had never worked in a region with such extreme poverty. The Jennings city council disbanded the local police force in March 2011. Wilson started working for the Ferguson Police Department in October 2011. The Ferguson Police Department awarded Wilson a commendation in February 2013 for his capture of a suspect who was later charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and resisting arrest.

Dorian Johnson, a 22-year-old male friend, and 18-year-old black guy Michael Brown were traveling together. Wilson, a white male Ferguson police officer, claimed that Brown attacked him in Wilson’s police car and that this led to a fight that lasted until Wilson’s service pistol fired. Johnson claimed that Wilson started the altercation by threatening to shoot at Brown before holding him by the neck through the window of Wilson’s patrol cruiser.
