Quarry was the most prominent boxer from a prominent Irish-American family that also included three other professional fighters (his father and two brothers). At age five, Quarry’s father gave his son his first pair of gloves. He later came to believe that his career had already been chosen for him at an early age. At the age of eight, Quarry began competing as a Junior Amateur and earned his first awards. Later, he developed nephritis, a crippling condition that kept him from doing anything for years. His recovery from that condition to become a professional athlete was seen as a feat of medicine. Quarry gained recognition when, at the age of 19, he triumphed in the 1965 National Golden Gloves title in Kansas City.
