Gray was conceived by Cindy and Jesse Gray in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.Sonny Douglas Gray, a professional baseball pitcher for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball, was born on November 7, 1989. He had previously played for the Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics, and New York Yankees. The Yankees dealt Gray and Reiver Sanmartin to the Cincinnati Reds on January 21, 2019, in exchange for Shed Long Jr. and a pick in the MLB draft’s competitive balance round. He was reunited in the trade with catching partner Curt Casali and pitching coach Derek Johnson, who was also his pitching coach at Vanderbilt. Prior to the deal, Gray extended his contract with the Reds for a further three years. Then, in exchange for Josh Stowers, the Yankees dealt Long to the Seattle Mariners. Gray rebounded in his debut season with the Reds after a largely dismal run with the Yankees.
In 2020, he had a 3.70 ERA and a 5-3 record. With seven wild pitches, he had the most in the NL. Gray had a 7-9 record, a 4.19 ERA, and 155 strikeouts in 135+1/3 innings over 26 starts in 2021.
