Joe the pitcher was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the 39th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball. However, he refused to sign the contract and choose to play collegiate baseball at California State University, Northridge.
Joe Ryan who played collegiate summer baseball with the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2015 and 2016, was also selected as a league all-star in the year 2016.
He later was transferred to California State University, Stanislaus in the year 2018.
On April 1, 2022, manager Rocco Baldelli announced that Ryan would be the 2022 Opening Day starting pitcher. According to the announcement, he starts his first career Opening Day against the Seatle Mariners which happened as such.
