Angel Hernandez, who was born on August 26th, 1961, is a Cuban who has umpired in Major League Baseball games.

He left his native Cuba early in what many believe was a desire to spread his father’s ashes, and he only returned in 2015.He was a celebrated umpire as he was ranked in 1999 as the 31st out of 36 umpires in the “Major League Baseball Players Association survey”. Hernandez was also retained for the 2000 season ahead of 13 other coaches in the National League.

He had the chance to use his number 5 while in the National League, but his beloved number 5 was taken from him and given to Dale Scott when the MLB consolidated the umpires in 2000. This forced him to use number 55. However, after the retirement of Scott in 2017, Hernandez had the opportunity to wear his favorite number 5 again for the 2018 season.

Hernandez had received criticism as part of his career. He received criticism from players, fans, and even his fellow coaches.

He filed a lawsuit against the MLB in July 2017, over what he described as racial discrimination. He said this discrimination had kept him from being promoted to the status of crew chief and that he was not getting the chance like his colleagues to umpire in World Series games.
