Diana Toebbe, the wife of a US Navy engineer, acknowledged responsibility for helping him try to sell nuclear submarine trade secrets to a foreign country. The offence carried a potential sentence of life in prison.

Jonathan Toebbe’s area of expertise was nuclear-propulsion systems on submarines, one of the nation’s best-kept secrets.

He sent messages to a person he believed to be a representative of that nation in an effort to sell the information to that government, according to the justice department. The guy was an undercover FBI agent, in fact.

Jonathan Toebbe was in the Navy before he joined the military reserve. He was employed by the head of naval operations in Arlington, Virginia.

The Toebbes posed a flight risk, according to the prosecution, as evidenced by messages between the couple considering leaving the US swiftly.

He will serve a sentence of 12 to 17 years, as stipulated in his plea agreement.

In a federal court in Martinsburg, West Virginia, both Toebbes admitted to planning to disseminate restricted data.
