Michiaki Takahashi was born in 1928 and passed away on December 16 of the year 2013. He earned his MD in 1954 from Osaka University’s Medical School.

Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is a highly contagious disease caused by the initial infection with varicella-zoster (VZV). It usually starts on the chest, back, and face.

Dr Michiaki Takahashi was married to Hiroko Takahashi. In 1963, he moved to Houston with his wife and two children. They had a neighbor who had a daughter who used to play with his son.

Once he noticed a blister, chickenpox on the girl’s head and feared if she had transferred it to his son. That time the symptoms were severe, and no effective treatment was there for chickenpox.

As he suspected, his son started getting rashes on his face that quickly spread across his body. He and his wife had sleepiness nights when his son was having the disease.

Then he realized that he should use his knowledge of viruses to develop a chickenpox vaccine. He was in his early thirties at that time and spent most of his life studying measles and polio viruses.

Dr Michiaki Takahashi is famous for his invention of vaccination against chickenpox. His vaccination has been administered to millions of children around the world as an effective measure to prevent severe cases of contagious viral disease and its transmission.

The doctor was born in Osaka, Japan. He joined the Research Institute for Microbial Disease, Osaka University in 1959. After studying measles and polio viruses, Dr. Takahashi accepted a research fellowship in 1963 at Baylor College in the U.S.

During this time his son got a serious bout of chickenpox, which led him to turn his expertise towards combating the highly transmissible illness. After five years of invention, his vaccination was ready for clinical trials.
