In a few weeks, Darshan Singh, Singapore’s chief executioner for 46 years, will tie a rope around the 25-year-neck old’s and utter the same words to more than 850 condemned criminals.
“I’m going to transport you somewhere more favourable than here. God’s blessings on you”
Yesterday’s announcement by the Singaporean government that it would not grant the Australian’s request for a reprieve severely diminished Nguyen’s chances of avoiding the hangman’s noose.
Although Mr. Singh has officially left the jail service, he is nevertheless occasionally asked to carry out executions for which he is paid $S400 ($312).
His identity has up to now been a closely kept secret in Singapore.

Who is Singapore’s hangman?
Singapore’s hangman is former Singaporean chief executioner Darshan Singh was born in 1932.
After Mr. Seymour, the previous executioner, left in 1959, Darshan Singh started working for the British as an executioner. Singh wanted to go as well, but he was having trouble landing a job.
1,000 death row inmates were hung by him over the course of his career. He was paid S $ 400 (about $200 in euros) for each execution he carried out.
He continues to claim the title of quickest executioner after carrying out seven executions in under 90 minutes.
