The most sacred city in Islam is Mecca, also known as Makkah al-Mukarramah, which serves as the administrative center and capital of Saudi Arabia’s Mecca Province. Inland from Jeddah on the Red Sea, it is situated in a small valley 277 meters (909 feet) above sea level.

In 2020, the metro area is expected to have a population of 2.042 million, placing it third in terms of population in Saudi Arabia behind Riyadh and Jeddah. There are more than three times as many pilgrims each year during the ajj pilgrimage, which is observed in the twelfth Hijri month of Dhl-ijjah.

Mecca is generally regarded as “the fountainhead and cradle of Islam.” Mecca is revered in Islam as the city where its prophet Muhammad was born.

Muslims consider that Muhammad initially received the Quran at the Hira cave, which is located on the Jabal al-Nur (“Mountain of Light”), just outside the city.

The Hajj at Mecca is a requirement for all able-bodied Muslims. Muslims believe Abraham and Ishmael built the Ka’bah, which is housed in the Masjid al-Haram, the Great Mosque of Mecca. It is one of Islam’s holiest sites, and Muslims should pray facing it (qibla).
