Why did Mark do Unus Annus with Ethan?

The project, which at first went by numerous placeholder names (including “This many days left,” “365,” and “Annus Singulos”), had been in development for a number of months before it was made public. After producing nearly exclusively gaming-related videos for several years, Mark and Ethan claim that Unus Annus was made with the objective of straying from their mainstream material. In the post-credit scene of one video, Mark and Ethan talked about Unus Annus as a chance to step outside of their comfort zones and try more experimental, creative, and unorthodox content—things they wouldn’t typically be able to do on their main channels due to YouTube’s strict, advertiser-friendly guidelines, monetization issues, and age restrictions.
