At the German Nürburgring in 1927, Alfredo Binda of Italy took home the title of first-place professional champion. Currently, the race is usually conducted following the Vuelta an Espaa, close to the end of the European racing season.

The race may be held on a circuit that is comparatively flat and favours sprinters in cycling or on a mountainous course that favours cyclists who are more all-around or climbers.

Riders from the UCI World Tour or its predecessors often finish first in the elite men’s race. However, there used to be separate competitions for amateur riders, particularly from Eastern Bloc countries.

The Triple Crown of Cycling for men at the top professional level is comprised of the World Cycling Championship, Tour de France, and Giro d’Italia.

Three Belgian cyclists, two Italian cyclists, a Slovakian cyclist, and a French cyclist have successfully defended their titles: Georges Ronsse (Belgium, 1928–1929), Rik Van Steenbergen (Belgium, 1956–57), Rik Van Looy (Belgium, 1960–61), Gianni Bugno (Italy, 1991–92), Paolo Bettini (Italy, 2006–07), Peter Sagan (Slov (France, 2020–21). The only rider with three consecutive victories is Sagan (2015–17). Alejandro Valverde of Spain has seven medals overall, which is the most of any rider (1 gold in 2018, 2 silver in 2003, 2005, 4 bronze in 2006, 2012–14).

Why do cyclists wear tight clothes?

Most importantly, it aids with wind resistance. When biking in the wind, looser clothing will puff out and significantly slow you down.

The potential advantages of wearing tightly fitting gear are not fully appreciated until after a long ride during which your jacket served as a parachute.
