Most times, I ask myself that why do we fart before we poop? Because it just can’t be prevented or controlled.

Anytime I go to the washroom to pass out those waste products stored in my rectum, some smelly gas comes out with it — which we call flatulence.

By the end of this write-up, I believe we will all get to understand because it took a lot of detailed research to put together answers to ‘why do we fart before we poop?’

Well, let’s get started.

Why do we fart before we poop?
Why do we fart before we poop?

You know when we eat, we do so for our body to absorb the nutrients for its use — a process we call digestion.

But at the end of the process of digestion, there will be left some waste products to be released in the loo.

But the question is, why do we fart before we poop ?

Answer: Your intestines have muscles that push poop through them. So when you got a big poop coming, it’s not just falling, it’s being pushed, so a lot of gas comes with it. When a poop isn’t on its way, poops aren’t being pushed, so gas isn’t either.

Now, you all can agree with me that the foods we consume produces gas. Examples of such foods are:

  • beans and lentils
  • asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and other vegetables.
  • Fructose, a natural sugar found in artichokes, onions, pears, wheat, and some soft drinks.
  • Lactose, the natural sugar found in milk.

So when some of these foods produce gas in your body, remember these gases would be in your intestines.

So once you squeeze your stomach to release a poop, the gas is pushed out as well and that’s what results to a fart before poop.

Is that understandable?

Okay explaining further, the process of dropping a poop is called gastric motility.

In normal digestion, food is moved through the digestive tract by rhythmic contractions called peristalsis. This movement is called “gastric motility.”

It’s how food moves through the digestive system.

Now note that all mammals produce methane gas to help the food move through the intestines.

And of course, humans are mammals. So when it’s time to push down the poop, the gas would come out first before the poop — that explains why we fart before poop.

I would like to give you a different explanation for a better comprehension of why do we fart before poop.

Now look at it this way, we all love drinks right? We all love some Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Pepsi, Energy Drinks, etc.

What you should note is, all these drinks are carbonated — which means they give us gas when we take them.

So you can attest to the fact that taking some of these drinks sometimes is accompanied by an ominous rumbling of the tummy.

My theory is that, in the latter example, the fart is in fact passing around a budding poop and thus when you’re ready to push all that poop out, the fart comes with it.

I believe with this, you now understand Why do we fart before we poop?
