Reed is a 30-year-old former U.S. Marine who was arrested in Moscow while on a tour in August 2019. Reed, who grew up in California, was a Texas resident at the time of his arrest, according to a website set up by his family to plead for his release.

He joined the Marines as an infantryman in 2011. Reed had previously served as a member of the Marine Presidential Guard. He was in charge of protecting then-Vice

President Joe Biden at Camp David during the Obama administration. Reed retired from the Marine Corps in 2016.

Reed enrolled in the University of North Texas after his service, where he took Russian language lessons, according to his family’s website.

Why was Trevor Reed detained?

Reed was arrested in Russia in 2016 while visiting his lover Lina Tsybulnik. He was apprehended by authorities in Moscow after exiting a car while inebriated on a busy roadway. Reed allegedly grabbed an officer’s arm while on his way to the police station, causing the police vehicle to swerve into another lane. This assertion is disputed by Reed’s parents and lawyers.

Reed’s family had spent the last two years preparing for his release. Biden met with the family over the phone in March of last year, and in June, he said he brought up Reed’s situation, as well as that of another former Marine, Paul Whelan, who is imprisoned in Russia, during a meeting with Putin.
