The International Boxing Association (IBA) has had its rights to organize boxing events at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 revoked by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to ongoing concerns over organizational governance.

This makes this the second consecutive Olympics in which the IOC will organize events without the International Federation, and it also includes events that qualify athletes for the Games.

The recent Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling, in which it was determined that IBA Presidential aspirant Boris van der Vorst should have been let to continue after being found ineligible, was the final straw, according to OC Sports Director Kit McConnell.

The IOC concluded that enough was enough and that the boxing qualifying events and competition would no longer be managed by the IBA in the best interests of the participants and the boxing community, according to McConnell.

“This decision is centered on the athletes themselves to provide confidence regarding the Olympic competitions and the Olympic qualification processes leading up to Paris 2024 and follows the extremely troubling concerns that continue to exist in the IBA,” the statement reads.

“The IOC Board has to intervene to provide athletes with certainty.”

The IBA responded by expressing its “great disappointment” with the choice and announcing that it would need some time to “seriously examine its next measures.”
