Camilla made it known that she intended to use the term “princess consort” when she married Charles in 2005, eight years after Lady Diana passed away. A first in the British monarchy’s history, that is.
After years of media speculation about their relationship, Charles and Diana’s acrimonious divorce, and Diana’s passing in 1997, the decision was perceived as an admission that the public was finding it difficult to accept her new role.
The same rationale led her to decide against adopting Diana’s title of Princess of Wales after she married Charles, who was the Prince of Wales at the time.
Instead, she went with the title “Duchess of Cornwall,” which is traditionally granted to the presumed successor, to model herself after Charles’s second title, “Duke of Cornwall.”
In an interview with British Vogue, Camilla acknowledged that the negative press she experienced at the time “wasn’t easy.”
She remarked, “I was under so intense scrutiny for such a long time that you simply have to find a way to live with it.
Nobody enjoys being constantly observed and, you know, criticized, but I believe that in the end, I sort of rise above it and carry on.
