Petersen was born in the German town of Emden on March 14, 1941. The retired navy officer’s son is Petersen. Petersen attended Hamburg’s Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums from 1953 until 1960. He used an 8 mm camera to create his first films while still a student. When he was directing plays at the Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg in the 1960s, he was frequently spotted there.
