Two Columbia High School students were arrested on Thursday, September 19, after administrators discovered one of them was with a loaded handgun on campus, DeKalb County School District officials said.
School administrators noticed the smell of marijuana and searched the student’s belongings and that was when they discovered the loaded gun.
DeKalb County School District police charged both teens with possession of a weapon on school grounds and possession of a handgun by someone under the age of 18.
The students’ names were not released and it’s unclear how old they are.
Thursday’s incident was at least the third time this year arrests were made after a gun was discovered on a DeKalb high school campus.
In mid-August, a 14-year-old Stephenson High student was arrested with a firearm after another student told authorities she saw the weapon. Also, last week, Lithonia High school was placed on lockdown after one student allegedly pulled a gun on another, authorities said. The student was taken into custody after administrators discovered the weapon.
