The lawmaker began working in Washington, D.C., in 1968, standing in as Sen. Marlow Cook of Kentucky’s principal assistant. The yearly salary for the position was $17,000, or more than $130,000 in today’s money.

After sixteen years, McConnell gained his own Senate seat in 1984, which came with a guarantee of regular, middle-class pay. He has been there for more than 35 years and presently earns $193,400 as a minority pioneer.
