Alan Rankine is a Scottish musician and record producer, he was born on 17 May 1958. He is known for his work as the keyboardist and guitarist for the Associates, which is a rock band he co-founded, during the late 1970s, with a lead singer called Billy Mackenzie.
Rankine started his career with the cabaret group Caspian, which later evolved into the Associates. They released three albums: Sulk (1981), Fourth Drawer Down (1981), and The Affectionate Punch (1982). Rankine quit the group, on the eve of a Sulk tour in 1982, he developed himself as a producer, and he worked with several musicians including Paul Haig, Cocteau Twins, and the Pale Fountains, while Mackenzie continued with other collaborators. In 1986, he entered into a recording agreement with the Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule and started a solo career. He released three solo studio albums: The Big (1986), She Loves Me Not (1987), and The World Begins to Look Her Age (1986).
