Woodfox survived for almost 43 years in 6 a 9-foot cell in Louisiana State Penitentiary, one of the worst prisons in America (also called Angola Prison).
Woodfox was given a prison term in 1972 after being found guilty of the murder of prison officer Brent Miller. Miller’s body was found in a vacant detention cell.
The guard was attacked with a lawnmower blade and a hand-sharpened jail knife as others grabbed him from behind. The prisoners claim that Woodfox was responsible for doing this.
After being found guilty, Woodfox was immediately sent to solitary. Prior to it, he was serving time for an attack and an armed robbery.
Woodfox was unexpectedly released from prison in February 2016 after entering a no contest plea to homicide and aggravated burglary. His immediate release was mandated by a judge.
