After making a miraculous recovery from a severe leg injury he sustained in 2018, he announced his retirement in April 2021. In November of the same year, when being tackled in a game against the Houston Texans, Smith sustained spiral and complex fractures in his right leg.
Following an infection, Smith endured 17 procedures over the course of four hospital stays. At one point, doctors considered amputating the limb.
The youngest of the three children he shares with his wife, Elizabeth Barry, and former NFL quarterback Alex Smith, Sloane, underwent an emergency craniotomy to remove a malignant brain tumour.
On Saturday, he shared on Instagram that Sloane had “stroke-like symptoms” and was transported to the emergency department on May 10 before an MRI found “a huge brain tumour.”
Smith described the 10-hour procedure as “the most agonizing time of our lives,” but the neurosurgeons at Stanford Children’s Hospital completely removed the tumour.
