Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin, a left winger for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, was born in Russia on September 17, 1985. (NHL). Nicknamed “Ovi” (also spelled “Ovie”) and “the Great Eight,” Ovechkin holds the record for the most power play goals in NHL history and is regarded as one of the game’s greatest goal scorers of all time.

Ovechkin has competed for Russia in a number of international competitions. The 2002 World U18 Championship served as his introduction to IIHF competition. He made his World Junior Championship debut the following year, helping Russia win the gold medal. He participated in the World Junior Championships for two additional years and the World U18 Championships once more.
