Russian ice hockey player Alex Ovechkin, full name Aleksandr Mikhaylovich Ovechkin, was born September 17, 1985, in Moscow, USSR. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy three times (in 2008, 2009, and 2013) as the league’s most valuable player (NHL). The Washington Capitals won their first Stanley Cup under his direction (2018).
His father played professional football (soccer), while his mother won two Olympic gold medals (1976, 1980) while playing for the Soviet women’s national basketball team. Early in his youth, Ovechkin’s exceptional athletic pedigree became clear. At age 16, he competed at the top level of Russian professional hockey, and by age 17, he was the star forward for the national junior team.

Ovechkin was chosen by the Washington Capitals with the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft; however, the labor stoppage that resulted in the postponement of the 2004–05 NHL season caused his rookie season to be postponed by a year. Along with another highly anticipated rookie, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, he made his NHL debut in 2005, but Ovechkin’s 106 points in the following year helped him win the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year.
