In order to play for Spartak Moscow in the Russian Premier League, Rubins first relocated to Russia in December 2002. He was traded to Shinnik Yaroslavl three months later, though, and played 51 games over the course of two seasons without ever scoring. With Spartak Moscow, who were then led by the Latvian manager Aleksandrs Starkovs, Rubins signed a four-year deal in January 2005. His club sent him back on loan to Shinnik Yaroslavl in January 2006 for a 12-month period as he struggled to adjust and only made five appearances. He was connected to a second loan deal in June 2007—this time with Blackpool of the English Football League Championship—but on July 27, he signed a six-month loan agreement with FK Liepjas Metalurgs instead. After a half-season, for unknown reasons, he and his international teammate Imants Bleidelis were released by Metalurgs.
