He was an integral part of two World Cup-winning teams. Symonds batted right-handed in the middle order and bowled medium pace and off-spin.

He was also well-known for his exceptional fielding skills.

Symonds was born to an Afro-Caribbean father and a Danish or Swedish mother. Ken and Barbara, Symonds’ adoptive parents, left for Australia when he was three months old.

One of the adoptive siblings, Louise Symonds, was a Gladiator. He was not adopted and has two siblings.

Andrew’s father Ken worked as a teacher at the private fee-paying All Souls St Gabriels School in Charters Towers, northern Queensland, where Andrew grew up.

He was a natural athlete from an early age.

“My father was a huge cricket enthusiast.

“Before and after school, he used to throw balls at me five or six times a week. Inside the house, we’d also play games with ping-pong balls and Christmas decorations.”

The majority of his junior cricket was played for the Townsville Wanderers, with his father and son making the 270-kilometre round trip once or twice a week.

When the family moved to the Gold Coast, his parents became teachers at All Saints Anglican School in Merrimac.
