Angela Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem. For her many dramatic performances in plays, TV shows, and movies, Angela Evelyn Bassett is highly recognized. Bassett was raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, by her sister D’nette and her single mother, social worker Betty. She was motivated to pursue acting during a high school trip after seeing a Kennedy Center production of the classic drama Of Mice and Men with James Earl Jones.
After receiving encouragement from a teacher, Bassett pursued scholarship-funded studies at Yale, where she obtained a B.A. in Afro-American Studies and an M.F.A. in acting.
In addition to choosing her for the Broadway productions of August Wilson’s plays Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, renowned stage director Lloyd Richards, who trained her there, also gave her acting instruction.
Bassett struggled to break out of the conventional characters frequently played by African-American women in movies, despite her early success on stage. Her screen debut was a fleeting cameo in the cult classic F/X. (1986).
