Angela Bassett began her performing career as a child in a dance group, but it wasn’t until she went on a school trip to Washington, D.C. when she was in the 11th grade that she realized she wanted to be an actress. There, she saw actor James Earl Jones perform in a “Kennedy Center” production of the play “Of Mice and Men.” She had a brief stint as a receptionist at a beauty salon and also worked as a picture researcher for the magazine ‘U.S. News & World Report’ before she began a career in acting.
