Pointer was the fourth of six children born to Sarah Elizabeth and Reverend Elton Pointer on January 23, 1948, in Oakland, California. The Pointer Sisters made music history in 1974 when Pointer’s song “Fairytale” became a hit on the country music charts and made them the first black female group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.

Anita, Bonnie Pointer, and June Pointer founded the Pointer Sisters in 1969, and their older sister Ruth joined in 1972. The first three members are now all deceased. Anita left the band in 2015, but not before earning three Grammys, including one for Jump (For My Love). In the US, The Pointer Sisters had a number of top 10 hits.

At the age of 74, Pointer passed away from cancer at her Los Angeles, California, home on December 31, 2022. According to Pointer’s spokesman Roger Neal, she passed away with her family by her side. Jada, her daughter, perished from cancer in 2003 at the age of 37. June, her sister, passed away from cancer in 2006.
