Kiedis grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his mother, and just before he turned twelve, he relocated to Hollywood to live with his father. Flea and Hillel Slovak, who were students at Fairfax High School and members of the band Anthym, were friends with Kiedis. Kiedis enrolled in UCLA after high school but left his studies there after his sophomore year.
