The sandals and other footwear made by the renowned German shoe company Birkenstock Group B.V. and Co. KG are distinguished by moulded cork footbeds (soles) that adapt to the wearers’ feet from layers of suede and jute.

Johann Adam Birkenstock began the business in 1774, and it is still in operation today. Its headquarters are in Neustadt (Wied), Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The company’s original goal was to develop shoes that supported and moulded the foot rather than the flat bottoms that were common at the time.

The Fussbett (footbed) was created in 1896; Birkenstocks were initially offered for sale in Europe in 1925. The first person to sell Birkenstocks in the US was Margot Fraser in 1966. In the US in the 1970s, they were linked to hippies since they were advertised at health stores.

The Birkenstock brand can be traced back to Johann Adam Birkenstock, who was mentioned as a “vassal and shoemaker” in local church documents in 1774 in the small Hessian village of Langen-Bergheim. In 1896, Johann’s great-great-grandson, Konrad Birkenstock, created the first contoured insole for use by shoemakers in the manufacturing of customized footwear.

Konrad also created the Fussbett (footbed) and built two shoe stores in Frankfurt, Germany, where he continued to manufacture and sell his insoles.[A more trustworthy source is necessary] In 1947, Birkenstock launched a series of educational seminars to raise awareness of the benefits of their shoes.
