For 51 years, they comprised vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard, and vocalist-bassist Dusty Hill, until Hill’s death in 2021. ZZ Top developed a signature sound based on Gibbons’ blues guitar style and Hill and Beard’s rhythm section.

Although the Gibbons/Hill/Beard three has been together since 1970, Billy Gibbons did record the first ZZ Top single with two different musicians. That makes ZZ Top the longest-running band in the history of popular music with an unchanging lineup.

According to Ultimate Classic Rock, before his untimely death in July 2021, ZZ Top guitarist Dusty Hill gave his bandmates the order to carry on with guitar tech Elwood Francis in his place. In fact, based on what Billy Gibbons said in an interview with UCR, it appears that Francis will record with ZZ Top in the future.

Are the ZZ Top members brothers?

Dallas, Texas, is where Hill was born and reared. He played in a variety of bands, including the Warlocks, the Cellar Dwellers, and American Blues, alongside his brother Rocky Hill and future ZZ Top bandmate Beard. The final group, American Blues, released two full-length records for free before breaking up in 1968.
