Carter’s parents were William Stanley Carter, his mother, and Anne Baldwin Carter, his mother. Carter had three other siblings including Cynthia DeFelice, who is a children’s book author.

Ash Carter, as he was popularly known, was married to Stephanie DeLeeuw Carter after his previous marriage with Clayton Spencer came to an end. Carter and Spencer had two children named Ava Carter and Will Carter. Spencer is currently serving as the president of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, United States.

Ash Carter was also an associate professor at Harvard University from 1986 to 1988.

According to reports, Ash Carter had a heart attack which led to his death.
