Carter was one of the best professionals and is noted to have served as director of the Belfer Center for Science & International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School. Carter began his career as a physicist.

Per his performance and other hard work, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society (Forum on Physics & Society) in 2015. Carter also serves as an honorary director on the board of directors at the Atlantic Council. In April 2021, Carter joined the Tanium Board of Directors.

An abrupt cardiac incident was the cause of Ash Carter’s demise. Carter died at home in Boston, per a cross-medical examination.
