Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, renowned musician and legendary Santoor maestro, died this morning in Mumbai. He was 84 years old at the time.
Shiv Kumar, who was born in Jammu and Kashmir on January 13, 1938, began learning vocals and tabla at the age of five. At the age of 13, he began learning Santoor.
He’d been on dialysis for six months due to kidney issues. He died as a result of a heart attack.
Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
He was scheduled to perform jugalbandi alongside flute legend Hariprasad Chaurasia at a live concert in Bhopal on the 15th of this month under the banner of ‘Mahima Samaroh.’ Shiv-soulful Hari’s music has appeared in films such as ‘Silsila,’ ‘Lamhe,’ and ‘Chandni,’ among others.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the passing of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. Shivkumar Sharma Ji, he claims, popularized the
Santoor on a global scale, and his music will enchant future generations.
Shivkumarji’s death has left the cultural world poorer, Prime Minister said, recalling his interactions with him.
