He grew up in West Rand and had his high school education at the Florida Park High School.
He completed his tertiary studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, after which he pursued a teaching career. He began his teaching career at St. Johns College, followed by a ten-year stint as a lecturer in literature at his alma mater, the University of the Witwatersrand.
Ronge is most popular for his Spit and Polish section in the Sunday Times, his film surveys for a similar paper, and his Sunday night show on Radio 702. In the wake of composing for the Sunday Times for quite a long time, he composed his keep going segment on 23 February 2014. In 2015, the Sunday Times renamed its award for South African writing to the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize.
