The bad news arrived the same week that Messina had won at Craon on Hunion Delabrairie the previous Monday. And his untimely demise came just three weeks after his maiden racing triumph.
Messina, who was from Athee and had 51 rides in all, debuted aboard Fairy Of Light in January of last year.
According to the Mirror, the rider was scheduled to ride Gag Du Boulay, the horse on which he won his maiden victory, at Corlay on Sunday.
