Bernard Joseph Cribbins was born on December 29, 1928, in the Derker neighbourhood of Oldham, Lancashire, the son of cotton weaver Ethel and First World War veteran John Edward Cribbins. He and his two sisters were raised in close proximity to poverty.
His father was a “jack of all trades” who dabbled in acting.
When Bernard was 13 years old, Cribbins quit school and began working as an assistant stage manager at a community theater, where he also performed in a few minor roles.
Bernard apprenticeship at the Oldham Repertory Theatre was later completed.
He began his national service in 1947 with the Parachute Regiment in Mandatory Palestine and Aldershot, Hampshire.
Cribbins made his stage debut in A Comedy of Errors in 1956 at the Arts Theatre in the West End. He played one of the two Dromios.
Additionally, Bernard Cribbins appeared with co-stars in the inaugural West End productions of Run for Your Wife, There Goes the Bride, and Not Now Darling.
In 1960, he performed alongside Anna Quayle and Lionel Blair in the revue And Another Thing, written by Ted Dicks (music) and Myles Rudge.
