Bernard Kalb, a journalist, author, and former spokesperson for the Department of State who resigned in protest, was born on February 4th, 1922.

In the American city of New York, Kalb was born. Kalb is the son of Polish and Ukrainian immigrants. In 1942, Kalb graduated from City College of New York. Kalb served in the military for the next two years, principally as a reporter for an army newspaper in the remote Aleutian Islands.

After beginning his career there with CBS News, Kalb eventually worked for NBC News. When Kalb was hired, his younger brother Marvin was NBC News’ top diplomatic correspondent. He made his first trip to China in 1972 as a television correspondent alongside President Nixon.

In his function as the spokesman for the State Department, Kalb was a member of the American delegation during the first meeting between President Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva in November 1985. In 1986, Kalb left the State Department after reading about the Reagan Administration’s purported attempt to mislead media outlets.

Formerly married to Kalb was Phyllis Bernstein. Throughout their marriage, they were blessed with four children, which was wonderful. The only thing we really know about Phyllis is that she is Kalb’s wife.
