According to the officials, a common delusion or mental illness is what first sparked the killings.
The Chundawat family had relocated from their original home in Tohana, Haryana, and had been residing in the two-story house in Burari’s Sant Nagar neighborhood for almost twenty years. They were also known by the Bhatia family, according to their neighbors. A grocery store and a plywood company were conveniently located for the family.

On July 1, 2018, at around 7:15 am, Gurcharan Singh, a neighbor who used to go for daily walks with one of the deceased, went to the Chundawat residence after noticing Lalit Chundawat’s absence from the morning stroll and the fact that the Chundawat’s stores were still closed (the retailers usually opened between 5 and 5:30 am).
